Art for Art’s Sake

There were a number of ads packing out Art Advertiser and Studio News. Just so that there was no confusion, they were predominantly aimed at Artists, as in “exclusive Art and Glamour Studies” from Studio Sharon, “Art Studies of Nudes” from Bildverlag Korenjak of Karlsruhe (who were also offering “an elegant plastic match-box with two interesting pictures”), and the Art Studio Club and the Art Book Club. Chuck in Lloyd’s Vital Tonic — tablets and capsules for “restoring LOST VITALITY” (in capitals and whatever that means), Miss S N Bamattre of Piccadilly Circus offering “fascinating introductions”, and Yvonne, liking to hear from any gentleman “interested in the unconventional”, and you seem to have a rather rarified target “readership”. The mind boggles. The address that pops up a lot is 92 Holland Park Avenue, London W11, which is where AASN happened to be published. As you see from its Art Studio Club ad, it seems to be a very well-appointed little place (cabaret every Thursday?). I presume that address is still there. Probably owned by some Russian oligarch (what must it be worth!). Do the current inhabitants know what went on there.
